Speaker Hastert Commends President Bush's U.N. Speech; Spreading Freedom and Democracy Makes Common Sense

WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) today made the following statement:

"President Bush laid out a clear vision for the world community this morning at the United Nations. I commend the President by setting goals for more involvement from other countries in fighting the War on Terrorism, spreading democracy, and curbing devastating disease and hunger. On all accounts, President Bush stood tall as a statesman before other global leaders.

"There is a bit of an irony here. While President Bush today advocated more freedom around the globe, Senator John Kerry yesterday was critical of the liberation of Iraq. While this Thursday Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi comes to the beacon of democracy, the U.S. Capitol, to address a joint session of Congress, Senator John Kerry is questioning the costs of removing former Iraqi Dictator Saddam Hussein from power.

"Make no mistake about it: President Bush's common-sense approach to calling upon other countries to help America spread the ideals of freedom, democracy, peace and prosperity is right for the United States, right for Iraq, and right for the world community."
